Appalachian-Style Ladder Back Chair Classes
 
2-Slat Ladder Back Chair 

Duration: 5 Days 
Class Size: 2   

Cost: $950.00

Description: This oak chair provides the basic knowledge and skill building exercises necessary to create more complex chairs in the future. It is a rustic representation of the Appalachian mountain “settin chair” with a woven hickory bark seat. Primary emphasis on the use of traditional chair making tool, i.e., spoke shave, draw knives and the use of a shaving horse.  Materials and use of tools are included in the class fee.

 

 

3-Slat Ladder Back Chair        

Duration: 5 Days

Cost: $1250.00

Description: This cherry chair provides a sophisticated dining chair with strong, complex joinery.  The hickory bark seat colors blend beautifully with the cherry.  The construction of this chair introduces the use of power tools, i.e., band saw and lathe. Class fee includes all materials. A supply list of required woodworking tools will be provided upon enrollment.

 

4-Slat Ladder Back Side Chair Duration: 5 Days   Class Size: 2   
Cost: $1550.00

Description: This cherry Captain’s arm chair is an elegant dining or occasional side chair. The arms provide excellent practice exercises for sculpting wood and creating more complex joinery. Class fee includes all materials. A supply list of required woodworking tools will be provided upon enrollment.

 

6-Slat Ladder Back Rocking Chair Duration: 5 Days

Cost: $1950.00

Description: The cherry rocking chair provides all the challenges of the previous chairs plus new experiences in bent lamination and more complex joinery. Class fee includes all materials. A supply list of required woodworking tools will be provided upon enrollment.

 

Windsor-Style Chair Classes
Sack-Back Windsor Chair  Duration: 5 Days
Class Size: 2 
Cost: $1050.00

Description: The colonial Windsor chair is made with traditional materials: oak, maple and pine. Draw knives, spoke shaves, travishers, adz, spoon bits and scorps will be used to make this rustic chair. Materials and use of tools are included in the class fee.

 

Continuous Arm Windsor Chair Duration: 5 Days   Class Size: 2 Cost: $1150.00

Description: The Continuous arm Windsor chair provides experience in steam bending wood in both the radial and tangential grain direction. Creating extra strength with back bracing is an important part of this chair. Class fee includes all materials. A supply list of required woodworking tools will be provided upon enrollment.

 

Spoke Shave Duration: 1 Day 
Class Size: 4 
Cost: $175.00

Description: The redesigned “Filbeck” spoke shave is exceptionally comfortable and energy efficient to use.  The traditional boxwood or cherry will be used to create this elegant chair making tool. Materials and use of tools are included in the class fee.

 

Basic Finishing   Duration: 2 Days Class Size: 4 Cost: $300.00

Description: This class includes preparing the wood surfaces, using stains, dyes and grain fillers. The finished will be wipe-on varnishes/urethanes, shellac and oil finishing. Materials for this class are included in the class fee.

 

Advanced Finishing Duration: 2 Days Class Size: 4   Cost: $300.00

Description: This class includes spray finishing with lacquer, shading, tinting and rubbing out film finishes.  French polishing with shellac will also be done.  Materials for this class are included in the class fee.

 

Tool Sharpening  Duration: 1 Day Class Size: 4   Cost: $175.00

Description: This class covers sharpening chisels, plane irons, scrapers, carving and turning tools. You will learn the procedures to hollow grind bevels and hone the cutting edge with many different honing devices. Bring a new (or in good condition) chisel, plane iron or scraper to this class.

 

Touch-up & Repair

Duration: 1 DayClass Size: 4

Cost: $200.00

Description: This class will address fixing loose joints, repairing or replacing broken parts.  Touch-up of color and filling dents will also be covered. Bring a small chair or furniture piece that is in need of repair.

 

Wood Bending Duration: 2 Days
Class Size: 4
Cost: $200.00
Description: This class introduces steam bending and bent lamination.  An oval Shaker Box will be made in this class.  Making steam bending and bent lamination parts will be demonstrated. Learning how to make steam bending and bent lamination forms is a very important part of this class.
